French term

quitté la présidence

French to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
From the memories of a former president of a scientific society:

"Quand en 1995 j’ai quitté la Présidence de I’Union lors du Congrès ..."

Given the term in office was regularly completed, would you use resign or retire (from presidency or as president of)???

Many thanks for your help!

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): writeaway

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

handed over the presidency / finished term of presidency /as president

I see what you mean about trying to avoid any suggestion of negativity. These occurred to me as pretty neutral.
Peer comment(s):

agree Sheila Wilson : "handed over" is both neutral and common

Thanks Sheila.
agree Dr Lofthouse : Agree. 'Resigned' gives the impression there were some problems. I prefer 'completed his term in office' or a similar phrase.

retire from the presidency/when my term is up

To retire is not negative, but if one doesn't like that word, then use "when my term is up", the idiomatic expression for leaving an elected or appointed position after fulfilling a whole term (leave could imply quitting early).

left the office of President... at the end of my term in 1995

The first part of the phrase "left the office of President" is a commonplace expression. If you want to be absolutely clear that this was a normal transition, you could at "at the end of my term."
