Ukrainian term

Drohobyts'kyy Derzhavnyy Pedahohichnyy Instytut im. I. Ya. Franka

Ukrainian to English Other Education / Pedagogy document translation
I would like to have it clarified both to me and to the colleagues the correct way of translating the name of the educational establishmebnt into English:
1/ the classically accepted one: Drohobych State Pedagogical Institute named after Ivan Ya. Franko;
2/ Ivan Franko Drohobych State Teachers Education Institute.
So, dear translators, which is the best variant?
Thank you.

Vassyl Trylis Apr 29, 2009:
Sarah, you're right too... 1. Each of versions mentioned will go.
2. Strictly legal way is to find a document (or site) created in that University and take their own official name. I suppose, such name would not coincide with your propositin, Ivan.
Ivan Petryshyn (asker) Apr 29, 2009:
no quite so (degree updating) The matter is that even teh official web of the Institute(now - a University) gives a different name: Teacher Training University. The other acceptable variant could be 'Teacher Education University', - and there's nothing to be done with that: the tradition of the country whose official language is English prevails!

Vassyl Trylis Feb 21, 2009:
It depends They in USA need to be trained on "Pedagogical" as this term is a part of official name of the Institute. And is capitalized.
If the purpose is to explain - then "teachers education" would be more comfortable. So, you may translate it as "Pedagogical" and give the explanation in brackets or as footnote.
Sergey Naraevsky Feb 15, 2009:
"Named After" To my knowledge, "...named after" is never used by natives, it's rather some kind of Soviet-era soundbite
Ivan Petryshyn (asker) Feb 15, 2009:
pedagogical and educational please, read the text above
Ivan Petryshyn (asker) Feb 15, 2009:
discussion on my post and your answer dear Sir:
what about the connotation of the word 'pedagogical" which ia hardly used and understood in the USA? You, do know the meaning of the 'pedagogue', don't you?
By the way, they do not understand neither 'pedagogical', nor ' philology' - quite different words are being used, Sir- teachers education and linguistics- the usus is more important than a dictionary: rule no. 1 in the translation and in interpreting.

Ivan Franko Drohobych State Pedagogical University

Кожний варіант по-своєму незграбний, і тут нема ради. Тому я пішов іншим шляхом: просто вибрав у Гуглі найчастіше вживану форму. Вона й мені здається оптимальною. Хіба може додав би 's до Franko. Або: Franko's name.

Дякую. По-вашому мені здається навіть краще, але так чомусь рідко пишуть.
agree Roman Bulkiewicz : Не треба «'s». Якщо за англійським зразком, то не треба. // Це він зараз університет. Раніше був інститут.

Дякую, Романе. Згоден, той довісок якийсь неживий. А інститутами колись майже всі внз були :).
agree Ann Nosova : може, Дрогобич на перше місце? (http://www.eaeeie.org/theiere/task1/12/THEIEREtask1appendice...

Дякую. Теж поширений варіант.
agree Stanislav Korobov : maybe ''Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University/Institute **of** Drohobych"?

Дякую. І так теж пишуть. Взагалі, комбінацій із 6 чи 7 слів... дуже багато :)). Будь-який із запропонованих перекладів є правильним. А єдиного офіційного, очевидно, не існує.
agree Olena Feshovets : 'The Ivan Franko State Pedagogical University of Drohobych' - check with the Lviv University site www.lnu.edu.ua

Дякую. Сайт Львівського університету... ну, це авторитет :).
