Portuguese term

vaidoso

Non-PRO Portuguese to English Other Psychology personality trait
this is not VAIDOSO in the negative connotation that the word 'vain' conveys in English, but rather VAIDOSO as someone who acts positively (this might involve dressing up, wearing make-up or getting one's hair trimmed) to make sure they look presentable.

any idea will be appreciated!

thanks!

:)

Assunto: Como traduzir "vaidoso"

Mensagem: Vain não cabe, quase todas as conotações são negativas. Não acho que tem palavra que corresponde. Para uma conotação positiva ou melo menos neutra, teria que ser assim:

She takes a lot of care with her appearance.

She takes pride in her appearance.

Para dar uma conotação negativa seria vain mesmo, ou

She is obsessed with her appearance

proud

I would probably say "proud" because it has that positive connotation you are looking for... it's just a suggestion.

Self respect

This is one of those words that have no direct translation to English.

But just thinking about the meaning of the word in Portuguese, to me having or demonstrating self respect would fit quite well.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Marlene Curtis : You can have self-respect and not be "vaidoso".

Very true. Like I said there's no true translation for the term, that was what I came up with as the closest in meaning.

well-groomed

Não é exatamente o conceito de vaidoso, mas fica muito próximo da descrição que você fez. Dependendo do contexto, talvez seja apropriado.

Is there anything more attractive than a well-groomed man with a real sense of style and fashion? While Woodbury Commons seems mostly filled with female shoppers, the fact is there are plenty of options for men looking to complete their wardrobe or designer look.

Want to be a stylish, well-groomed man? I highly recommend you look at buying the low-cost eBook, The Men’s Grooming Handbook and then shopping at Woodbury Commons to complete your look.

According to Rules for making peer comments (3.6), "... and/or disagree with answers provided by others, is prohibited. ", you should just use 'neutral' peer comments. Thanks
neutral Carla Queiro (X) : I just read the rules and there is nothing prohibiting people from using disagree for answers.

This could work, depending on the context. Someone with a good self-image naturally takes good care of his/her appearance, etc.
