In any case, there is no such thing as "covered by potential to..." This may be a translated text from another language rather than original English writing. The most likely meaning I could surmise is "there are currently 8 professions WITH potential to prosperity." Even with such massaging of the text, it still fails to make a lot of sense, unless, of course, there is something we do not know in the larger context -- a very common story. The reason this sentence does not make much sense, even with such doctoring of the text, is that "professions with potential" cannot be limited to a specific number (8) in such a definite, matter-of-factly manner as this sentence presumes. More realistically, one could say, "there are a number of professions that have proven to have a high potential to lead to prosperity, of which we can currently list eight." I could buy that much, although I would still be uncomfortable with the word "prosperity." I would rather use "wealth" or "high income." I have posted my strategy for translating poorly written texts many times before on KudoZ pages. In summary, you can either translate the text literally, thus exposing its tattered state (which is fair), or, if the meaning is transparent, momentarily step away from the text and write what you think the writer meant. The choice depends on many variables, including your interaction with the client or the client's surrogates at the agency and how much leeway they are willing to grant you with the text. I often translate music CD inserts. The promotional texts I receive for translation are often truly bizarre, so I have established an agreement with the client that my translation (which is mostly Arabic to English) will be an adaptation rather than a translation. Once we have agreed on this, we have never had any problem. In this particular case, I would try something like: من بين المهن التي يغلب عليها احتمال أن تجلب دخلاً عالياً أو أن تجلب مستوى عالياً من المعيشة الخ Again, the larger context may hide some siginificant information that may alter the strategy and/or the translation. Alas, there is no way to get users of KudoZ to post sufficient context. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 51 mins (2008-12-01 02:08:55 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I am also intrigued by how this question relates (if it does) to the other questions currently posted by the same asker about rehabilitation, which further muddies the picture -- but maybe there is no connection. |
