Desde una perspectiva europea se ha analizado, aunque no suficientemente, el papel que han desempeñado las radios libres, asociativas o comunitarias. En Europa, los medios del tercer sector no han tenido la repercusión alcanzada en América Latina. Los referentes latinoamericanos han desempeñado un papel más protagónico e incisivo en la conquista de derechos civiles, aunque sus regímenes resulten menos estables y sus sociedades más empobrecidas económicamente.

The role of free radio, or radio belonging to associations and communities has been studied, although not sufficiently, from a European perspective. Media from the third sector (non-profit/NGOs) has not had the same repercussion as that achieved in Latin America. The Latin American radio operators have played a more incisive leadership role in securing civil rights, even though their governments are less stable and their societies, more impoverished.
