Il clivaggio (dal francese clivage, derivato dall'olandese klieven "fendere") è la naturale tendenza di determinate strutture a separarsi, per la presenza di un'interfaccia tra due materiali diversi.
In medicina, per esempio, c'è clivaggio tra due strutture quando queste sono visibilmente divisibili tra loro: è una proprietà essenziale della corretta anatomia dei tessuti. Al contrario, un tumore infiltrante la vescica non è clivato dalla vescica stessa, perché infiltrante, appunto.
In geologia è una modalità di frattura per scorrimento fra i piani cristallini di un materiale, in particolare metalli e ceramiche.
