"what makes you tick" (non c'è typo) vuol dire "che cosa ti muove, ti spinge a fare ciò che fai ed essere come sei, perché ti comporti in un dato modo", ecc.
eviterei cose tipo "quali impulsi/pulsioni ti muovono", perché mi pare che al contesto sia più adatto il registro colloquiale...

Penso che qui si intenda che queste persone (X, il padre, e tutti gli altri) non abbiano idea di che cosa faccia scattare in loro un determinato comportamento. Può essere?

si, può essere, anzi è stata la prima cosa che ho pensato. il dubbio mi è venuto perché in questo momento dell'intervista il discorso è parecchio più generico, ma può essere benissimo che sia semplicemente così |

Si tratta di una metafora tratta dall'immagine di un bambino che sventra un orologio per scoprire "cosa gli fa fare tic toc" ("what makes it tick"). Di consequenza, il significato va letto come "cosa lo fa funzionare", con la metafora dell'essere umano come meccanismo funzionante.
