Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Oct 1, 2002:
Choices The problem though, is which to use. Personally, I had never heard of xylography, and so I wonder how many of the articles readers will have either. Should I use wood engraving?

woodcut engraving /woodcut

sounds much friendlier to a native ear
[not mine, though]
nothing's wrong with xylography, either

SORRY: it was meant to read \'wood engraving /woodcut\'

I think there is at least enough evidence and peer consensus that \'the nice word xylography is of very limited circulation in English (I can hardly rely too much upon my own opinion since i\'m not a native speaker: in my native tongue, which is Russian, this technique is called \'xilografia\' just like in Romance languages...)
I would definitely go with \'wood engraving\' though

agree Tudor Soiman : wood engraving /woodcut; xylography is a nice word only it's almost never used in real life

xylography

Main Entry: xy·log·ra·phy
Pronunciation: zI-'lä-gr&-fE
Function: noun
: the art of making engravings on wood especially for printing

use the term that is appropriate to the context. If you think the people reading your translation would be... puzzled by the term \'xylography\'...then use \'wood engraving\'. Although xylography is not a word made up by non-native speakers. :) My advice would be not to try to simplify the text unnecessarily.
Good luck

Lavorazione su legno

We do not have too many words in Italian starting with an X because it is not part of the alphabet. I feel that is you must describe this event to the general public, I would use the expression .....esemplari di lavorazione su legno (examples of wood art)
