English term

Minaret

Non-PRO English to Persian (Farsi) Tech/Engineering Architecture Persian Architecture
Hi,

I am told that you use the same word for the minaret of a mosque and for a pillar with a fire lit on top of it for guiding people through the desert as in “Forty Minarets” (“Chehel Minar” or whatever the exact word is), the old name for Persepolis.

The reason I'm confused here is that the word given in Wikpedia is not the same as the word I would have thought you used for "minaret". (I would have expected something like "mena:reh"). Please refer to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persepolis.

Please write the word in Iranian script and give a transliteration in Latin script.

All the best,

Simon

agree Edward Plaisance Jr : it is obviously an Arabic word and the "t" in the English word comes from the "ta marbuta" in Arabic where it is pronounced as a "t" in the "edhafa" position. I wonder why it did not come into Persian as "menaret" like "vezarat".

I don't know either. Maybe the reason lies in the fact that in vezarat we have a fat'heh, but in menareh we have a kasreh. Thanks anyway.
