casey (asker) Apr 18, 2008:
Sorry for the confusion, everyone. The 夫人 part is Japanese. Everyone is correct in assuming that this is "Mrs." or "the wife of." I'm not familiar with Chinese names, so I didn't even consider that it might be a Japanese word.

I don't know the title appropriate for her, since he's royal...

Shi Tao's wife. His name is 涛 which is not a given name, his surname is 石 which is, again, not a family name, “石涛”is one of his numerous noms de plume. His family name is 朱,his given name is 若极,and 元济 or 原济 latterly...

Shi Tao's wife or Tao Shi's wife

I entered this entry for pastoral taylor.

石涛夫人 is 石涛's wife.

石涛: Shi Tao or Tao Shi, if he does not otherwise have his own special English name. 'Shi' is the family name (石).

As casey also metioned 黄省身 in another question, I think this 石涛 is not that famous 石涛 whose real name was 朱若极, because there was not a peer of that 石涛 called 黄省身.

You can translate 石涛 as Shi Tao if your readers are Chinese, or you are translating political characters such as that 黄省身, because placing the family name before the given surname is China's recommended standard in translationg names into English. If your readers are westerners, you can translate 石涛 as Tao Shi.

sorry for the typo:
before the 'given surname' -> before the 'given name'
Note from asker:
Good observation. The other person is apparently Deputy Mayor of a city in China right now. Both of these people were involved in setting up operations of a Brother Industries subsidiary in China.

It depends on the context. If this 石涛 is just the name of this lady, I think the Chinese should be 石涛女士, because we seldom use 夫人 that way in current Simplified Chinese. Mrs. may work, but I guess the given name of that lady should be used with 'Mrs.'
