I used the nickname “Will” once or twice, but it did not fit him when it came from my mouth. I went back to calling him William, our relationship as formal as a pair of staid, black pumps.

"pumps" here refer to female shoes with medium/high heels. Black pumps are often worn on formal occasions, and here the relationship is compared to a pair of staid (=sober) shoes, such as these
