English term

as formal as a pair of staid, black pumps

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
I used the nickname “Will” once or twice, but it did not fit him when it came from my mouth. I went back to calling him William, our relationship as formal as a pair of staid, black pumps.

Why pumps can stand for the formal relationship?

is the black calf opera pump with black grosgrain bow. The man’s pump, a word believed to derive from “pomp,” is the oldest surviving vestige of nineteenth-century court fashion still in popular use. www.ravistailor.com/news.php?ItemNo=45

Whoever coined the phrase "Shoes make the man" could not have been more right...Be aware: if you wear opera pumps you're really making a statement. www.austenmcdonald.com/writings/ocmf/shoes.html The most aristocratic and elegant of all evening footwear..

Not only "female" shoes, the most traditional court shoes for men are called pumps: Traditionally, the most formal shoes are patent-leather opera pumps (court shoes) decorated with a ribbed silk bow, as worn with white tie. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_tie

formal black shoes

"pumps" here refer to female shoes with medium/high heels. Black pumps are often worn on formal occasions, and here the relationship is compared to a pair of staid (=sober) shoes, such as these
