Italian term

linfa vitale

Italian to English Marketing Marketing marketing presentation
"Nuovi prodotti - la linfa vitale delle aziende."

I did translate this as "life blood" but the customer wasn't happy, any other suggestions greatly appreciated as my creative vein seems to have run dry...

Thanks in advance.

Fiona Grace Peterson (asker) May 29, 2007:
Thanks :-) They are bakery and ice-cream products sold to the restaurant and catering trade - croissants, quiches, ice-cream desserts...
James (Jim) Davis May 29, 2007:
I was about to put life blood up, but just read your comment in time. Now I'm tempted to suggest "vital lemon juice", which is what your customer deserves mho.
CMJ_Trans (X) May 29, 2007:
not sure what his problem is/was but if you tell us what sort of products they are, it might help...

agree WendellR : God save us from clients who know a little bit of English; this is a good solution to a non-problem! (I, too, would cut "quintessential".)

vital essence

or simply "essence"

no problem with Jim's either - or with "lifeblood", though I guess the client didn't like the sanguinary reference.

élan

This came to me as an idea, however I am not much help as to how to phrase it, if ever.

Just another option.

main ingredient

main ingredient of a company, if they're desperate for a confectionery reference. Perhaps "leavening agent" would render the idea, but now I'm being silly (like yr client).

I'm inclined to agree with the 2 Jims, but if the client doesn't like the blood reference, then why did he write "linfa" which is also a bodily fluid even in Italian??
Peer comment(s):

agree Nicole Johnson : This would be my first choice, given the products they are marketing.

critical source of income/sustaining elements

My version. 'Linfa vitale' refers to the 'critical source of income' for companies in your context
