French term

la politique « d’immigration choisie-subie »

French to English Social Sciences Government / Politics immigration
Fort de plus de 100 000 signatures contre la politique « d’immigration choisie-subie », et de plus de huit cents membres, le collectif veut faire entendre leurs voix...

The "collectif" in question is "le collectif Uni(e)s contre une immigration jetable" or CUIJ

Does anyone know if there is a special term for this policy in English?

Many thanks

Discussion

Carol Gullidge (asker) Mar 29, 2007:
This is a real dilemma to grade: whether to opt for the safe generalization, or for the stranger-sounding, but more specific closer version of the source text. After all, if what's good enough for the BBC should be good enough for me! But in the end I'm going for the closer translation. MANY THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR INVALUABLE HELP!
chaplin Mar 28, 2007:
always happy to help it might be me next time
Julie Barber Mar 28, 2007:
I also read the CUIJ site and it is in protest against Sarkozy's proposed new immigration law. The BBC is reporting this law as 'selective immigration' http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4990962.stm
Carol Gullidge (asker) Mar 27, 2007:
thanks, Ségolène, for that invaluable info. It sounds as if the site could hold the key!
chaplin Mar 27, 2007:
I found a site which talks about chosen immigration rather than suffered from or undergone and the new law designed by Sarkozy
chaplin Mar 27, 2007:
chosen immigration is often used
chaplin Mar 27, 2007:
Though I work for Refugee Action I do not know of such a word in English

agree xuebai : oui il s'agit bien de cela. il s'agit en effet de l'immigration dite "choisie" censee de repondre aux besoins economiques des entreprises et la limitation de l'immigration "subie" c'est-a-dire non choisie, non decidee, de facto

selective immigration

Or, as Ali G would have it, "Is it because I is black?" ;-))))

Carol: is it because I is white? (titter titter)
Note from asker:
Sounds very feasible, and thanks for the laugh! I'm afraid I'm piking off to bed now....zzzz
Wish I could have split the points for this, as it's just as valid. And the BBC nearly swung it for me. Many thanks!
