I still have some time to think it over and make my decision...

GaryG Feb 3, 2007:
Mark, this seems as hard to translate as the pun behind Nik-on/off :-)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer.

Inter-nyet

I remember reading a one-liner that went something like this: "Do the Russians browse the Inter-nyet?"
Perhaps you could use it.
Peer comment(s):

agree Simon Hollingsworth : Inter-nyet and Inter-da would seem to fit, as long as there is a reference to Russia in the text

following pairs to play with

With your context ( вовлекалось в мировую "секту".. have been joining the world-wide "sect") I'd use one of the following pairs (as possible 'names' of the sect:

Inter-net < > Inter-nerd

Inter-net < > Inter-nest

Inter-net < > Inter-pet

And they bring the same (as in Russian) message :-))
Peer comment(s):

agree Valery Kaminski : net vs nest - great in the context!

inter-net / inter-sect

-This plays on both the "sect" idea and the fact that everyone's "intersecting" in this net..

Another possibility:

inter-net / inter-hole

or.. inter-net / inter-twine

Or:
More and more people were meeting at/connecting at the inter-sect called inter-net....

internet / antinet

Knowledgeable people will probably tell me that "antinet" means something very specific already.

Just an attempt to capture the spirit of the original!

Peer comment(s):

agree Irena Daniluk : internot, I like it! ;); and the pair seems semantically closest to the original...

inter-net / inter-knit

another suggestion
Something went wrong...
1 day 4 hrs

e-/www/online/web/"dot com" (yes/no; yeas/nays; phile/phobe; pros/cons)

To broaden the terms of reference. G.g. no need to stick to "internet" only just because it's the dominant term in Russian.

internet / interthreat

Еще один вариант.
