This has been bugging me all night, and I had hoped to wake up with a solution this morning. The usual translations of restore, reconstruct etc don't seem to fit. I have been toying with "compile" but am still having trouble and deadline is looming this morning. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Les deux galeries permettent de restituer le travail d'artistes reconnus de l'histoire de l'art moderne.

then it must quite simply be something along the lines of providing ample space to house the works of modern artists. Virtually any word: show/display/present/exhibit, etc. would do... don't lose any more sleep over it!

Thanks to everyone for your lightening response! CMJ, they aren't referring back to much. Just before this sentence they talk about the two galleries, one that combines works of art and film, and the other that has a more traditional presentation of modern art. Then comes the sentence with restituer.

it depends if you want to put forwrad the idea of simply exhibiting or of building up a picture of the 'history' ... but you're right - assemble and bring together are the only ones I'm more or less happy with!

That's fine, writeaway:-) I thought it meant to make their work live again for the public, but maybe re-create is ambiguous here.

My Larousse has this meaning of restituer as well, which I would translate as portray in an exhibit context...and I wonder if you can't just use 'exhibit' for 'permettrent de restituer'

Michelle has mentioned above the meaning given by Larousse I was thinking of here, and I have certainly come across it used circumstantially (by pretentious writers!) in exactly this sort of meaning, with no hidden connotation (I asked them!)

agree Jocelyne S : Yes, "exhibit" is what came to mind. I think the meaning is simply that these well-known artists will be on display (once again for some perhaps, hence the "de restituer").

Thanks, JS! Could be, though sometimes it is just in the sense of 'render'; a TV screen 'restitue une image fidèle' --- there, one might say 'reproduce', but in more everyday language, we'd say 'display'

Thanks, Miranda! As I say in my added note, I have come across this (pretentious?) usage before... // Beware of 'reproduce' here, because in the art world a 'reproduction' would be something specific; unless, of course, that's what they're talking about??

Possibly not the best word; in the sense of "render" or "portray" as already suggested:
"Together, the two galleries...."

My understanding is that through contrasting approaches, these two galleries show every aspect of this category of art (period, media, whatever).

or maybe: regain, retrieve, salvage, reclaim, recall, or bring back. Sounds like one of those times when if you see the right word, you'll know it. Just a few more words to see if one hits or gives you an idea for the right one.
