Chinese term

摆龙门陈

Homework / test Chinese to English Other Other
From a literary text, set in the time of the Kangxi Emperor.

Context:

过往行人,贩夫挑夫,还有城里出来避暑的闲汉都打了赤膊,吃瓜歇凉儿,摆龙门陈.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me, as I'm afraid that I don't have a clue what is meant by 摆龙门陈

Many thanks.

jyuan_us May 25, 2006:
sorry I misread your "midread" as a "mislead".
jyuan_us May 25, 2006:
Beth, you are all right. It is just a typo, not misleading at all. Chinese readers can also guess it is 阵.
Beth Dennison (asker) May 25, 2006:
Thank you, wherestip Yes, you're right, it should be 摆龙门阵. If I'm starting to misread things, I think I had better call it a night! Thank you for pointing this out.
wherestip May 25, 2006:
Beth, please check again. I think it should be 摆龙门阵, not 陈

It just mean "talk", casual talk. Sichuang Dialect. maybe "chatting"

agree ysun : 时髦话叫做“侃大山”。:-) However, 摆龙门阵 has another meaning in other situations.

agree Naikei Wong : I've heard this term, but I never quite understand it. Something new.

agree wherestip : I agree. I think sometimes it also involves telling each other tall tales based on historical figures and anecdotes, like 水浒传,三国演义,etc

agree Joyce Curran : 是的,我们四川人称闲聊为“摆龙门阵”
