: Yes, "State" can be omitted if it is clear that the text refers to the Soviet era, since everything was state-owned.

: This is lifted from the Oxford Russian Dictionary, but it's very heavy and literal//Touche! I'm not keen on "enterprise" either as a singular, and "logging" is better for the activity of cutting down trees, moving them and making timber etc.
