français term

constructions anarchiques

français vers anglais Sciences sociales Agriculture
From an article about different definitions of the word 'terroir':

"Ainsi conçu, le terroir présente diverses propriétés. Un bassin versant, le bassin d’alimentation d’une source polluée, un territoire où la forêt est fréquemment soumise aux incendies, une vallée qui s’enfriche ou qui est mitée par des constructions anarchiques, l’aire d’une ressource particulière, ne sont pas à priori des terroirs."

Any ideas what we would call these in English? Thanks!

Question: Is this one Piece of Property or not? One piece of property=my answer is right. Not one piece of property=Rachel's is right.

out-dated buildings

Perhaps
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : I don't honestly think you dare stretch it that far; indeed, 'old' buildings might be part of the charm of the place... I think there's much more to 'anarchiques' than just 'surannées' or 'désuètes'

disorderly huts

Although not exactly useable as is, it occurred to me that 'disorderly' conveys well the sense of 'anarchique' here.

'shanties' might be going a bit too far.

'untidy, rough' ?

even scruffy, unsightly?

'tatty old sheds'

neutral RHELLER : the huts are not disorderly, the location of the huts was not done in an orderly fashion - not the same thing

Thanks, Rita! I must admit I was kind of thinking of 'disorderly' as applying equally to their disposition... But I think 'anarchique' probably refers to ALL aspects of them -- after all, an-archy MEANS dis-order!

unconventional buildings

I think this probably covers it (within the context). "Anarchy" can mean "without law", so it could be interpreted as buildings not built according to general rules.
