Walkthroughs - The most effective means for an auditor to confirm his understanding how internal control over financial reporting is designed and operates to evaluate and test its effectiveness. It includes making inquiries of and observing the personnel who actually perform the controls; reviewing documents that are used in, and that result from, the application of the controls; and comparing supporting documentation to the accounting records. In a walkthrough, the auditor traces a transaction from origination through the company's information systems to the point where it is reflected in the company's financial reports.
Walkthroughs provide the auditor with evidence to:
1. Confirm the auditor's understanding of the process flow of transactions.
2. Confirm the auditor's understanding of the design of controls identified for all five components of internal control over financial reporting, including those related to the prevention or detection of fraud.
3. Confirm that the auditor's understanding of the process is complete by determining whether all points in the process at which misstatements related to each relevant financial statement assertion that could occur have been identified.
4. Evaluate the effectiveness of the design of controls.
5. Confirm whether controls have been placed in operation.

One of the first lessons to be learnt is the importance of the ‘process walkthroughs’ when confirming key financial reporting controls. When taking a financial statement account view of Section 404, in the identification of significant accounts, it is quite easy for the process flow to be lost or ignored. If the key controls around the preparation of financials are identified in isolation of the business process that results in those account balances, it is quite possible to get lost in the minutiae. For example, when reviewing inventory as a financial statement line item, one might consider that key controls include daily cycle counts, annual physical stock counts and reconciliation of the inventory accounts to the general ledger from the inventory management system. This approach may ignore critical controls such as authorisation of purchase orders to ensure transactions are valid and timeliness of goods receiving to ensure they are recorded in the correct period.

A process walkthrough approach enables a company not only to ensure they capture all key controls but also to minimise duplication and inefficiency. In the example above, it is just as likely that a team focusing on purchasing processes or accounts payable processes may duplicate effort or design inefficient tests of controls around purchase order approval processes and goods receipting that have already been captured and addressed in the inventory controls testing
