Just another way of phrasing it. Many different groups (phyla) of invertebrates have, for example, similar larval stages, such as the trochophore larva common to both molluscs and annelid worms (although there are also many species in both phyla that either pass through this stage while still in the egg or skip it entirely), which would indicate a common ancestry.
