Hi, I wasn't sure to put this here or in Off-topic, since the program hasn't actually started. I find this program interesting, and I'm curious to know the details. Are they looking for people who not only master a second language but are also specialists in a certain area? Can US citizens already be based abroad and still participate? The details are still a little vague but well worth keeping an eye on. Natalia ------ "The Pentagon is setting up a c... The details are still a little vague but well worth keeping an eye on. Natalia ------ "The Pentagon is setting up a civilian Language Corps, a cadre of some 1,000 foreign-language speakers who can help the government in times of war and national emergencies. In a three-year pilot program, the Defense Department will recruit volunteers and do testing to see if such a program would work. If successful, a permanent corps could be developed, said Robert Slater, who heads the Pentagon personnel office's security education program. " ... "The corps will be an entirely civilian organization managed by the Defense Department for the federal sector composed of members who will voluntarily join and renew their membership." ... "The dedicated pool will be comprised of a smaller number of members who will have contractual arrangements with dedicated federal sponsors and who agree to perform specific responsibilities and duties and serve a specific number of days per year." ----- Here's the link for the rest of the article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070509/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/language_corps;_ylt=AsH7346MfSvIKQo6XueoncvMWM0F And another: http://www.defenselink.mil/transformation/articles/2007-05/ta050907a.html ▲ Collapse | | | Parrot 西班牙 Local time: 04:57 Spanish西班牙语译成English英语 + ...
I recall from a recent search that there were certain language openings in the National Security Agency, particularly with regards to the languages of problem areas (Dari, Pashtu, Arabic, etc.). PS: The US is not the only country with this thrust (the residence eligibility requirements may prod you to investigate other possibilities). But even where I live, for instance, certain parallel trends may be observed.

Hi Parrot, Thanks for the interesting link. From what I saw, though, opportunities with the NSA are limited to those US citizens actually living on the US territory. Those living abroad are excluded. Makes it difficult to participate. I wonder if there's a program through the local embassies.

Hi Natalia, The residence requirement would seem to go for all governments (we get that as well). And perhaps not just for tax, but also for jurisdictional reasons (in some cases, agencies are required to post performance bonds, and these agencies in turn assume the risk of outsourcing abroad). And perhaps not just for tax, but also for jurisdictional reasons (in some cases, agencies are required to post performance bonds, and these agencies in turn assume the risk of outsourcing abroad). In the case of Spain, and given the lack of actual qualified manpower in the languages needed, I have observed this emphasis on the more recent scholarship and grants-in-aid programs, which are one source of qualified workers. This may likewise not be limited to national security concerns in the European area, but also extends to the recent EU amplification (former east-block languages are also favoured). The UK further extends this to business partners (China and Korea come to mind).
