http://www.latvijasradio.lv has archives of classical music broadcasts. One can search them in Google by spelling out a composer's name in Latvian and the URL, thus:

I'd like to look for past broadcasts featuring music by some of my favorite lesser-known composers (or, if someone knows of a Russian to Latvian transliteration chart, please advise me), Galynin, Taktakishivli, and Balasanyan.
In Russian: Галынин, Тактакишвили, Баласанян.

Transliteration chart will not help you, Latvian is a notoriously difficult language.
These are the Latvian names: Galiņins, Taktakišvili, Balasanjans

Thanks, all! Feb 22, 2006

I think I've got it worked out now.

It seems that you have to add an "s" to some names
but others you add an "a" to (Prokofjeva).

Maybe I should look up my friend from high school
(40+ years ago), Janis Starcs, and ask him how
to spell all these names!

Gary

Prokofjeva Feb 22, 2006

It is mostly adding the -s, but of course, it depends...

As regards Prokofjeva, it should be Prokofjevs, while Prokofjeva means Prokofjev's (symphony, for example)

Uldis

Ah, that explains all the hits such as www.latvijasradio.lv/program/2004-09/20040903_3.htm

on Prokofjeva! It's possessive!

Thanks,
Gary

In general Feb 22, 2006

all masculine names in Latvian end with "s", while feminine with "a" or "e". There are exceptions, of course (e;.g., on those names ending with "o").

If you see a masculine name in Latvian ending in anything other than "s", more likely than not is some case ending.
