I recently got a payment in my paypal account. Usually that's a good thing, but I don't recognize the sender or the amount. It's not a big amount - $41, but still, it seems suspicious. I think people can send you money through paypal just buy knowing your email address, and mine is posted on my profile. I looked up the name of the agency and found nothing that matches it exactly. Some similar names. I sent an email to the "sender email" and it bounced back. I'm confused. I keep good... See more I recently got a payment in my paypal account. I looked in my records and can't find any trace of contact with anyone of that name. I was not expecting a payment. Could this be a scam? What would you do? ▲ Collapse
Contact Paypal? | Nov 5, 2014 |
Have you contacted Paypal yet? They should be able to return the funds (assuming that is what you want to do ;] ). If nothing else, they should be able to put you in contact with the sender.

Hi Elizabeth, If I were you, I would have notified Paypal. They are usually very good at checking things. It could be a genuine mistake but the fact your email bounced back seems suspicious to me.

As our colleagues advised, it's best - and safer! - for you to notify PayPal and let them handle it. That you are unable to reach the sender raises a red flag. Clear your records and have them refund the sender.

to refuse the payment, I think. Then also notify PayPal about it, just to be on the safe side.
Probably a different currency? | Nov 5, 2014 |
Have you checked amounts due in other currencies (if any)? 41 USD can appear in your records as XX GBP or XXX RUB (whichever the client uses for payment). Next time it would make sense to ask your clients use reference numbers for payment via PayPal. The whole matter does not look like a big deal anyway. Paypal will handle it.
Just a thought | Nov 5, 2014 |
Did you expect this or similar amount from any of your customers or other legitimate sources (an eBay sale, an online store refund, friends or colleagues you collaborated with, etc.)? On rare occasions PayPal name may differ from one's current business name, f.eg. somebody you know as John Doe may have his name displayed as John and Mary Shop on his PayPal account, or vice versa...

When I receive a payment via PayPal, I always receive an email notification with the payer's address as the sender? Did you receive such an email? If so, you could contact the payer and ask, "What's up with that?"
