I have a strange feeling. I replied to an ad posted on 4/11. The 'client' replied to me saying that he wanted to work with me. He sent me the file and asked me to check if it was ok for me, to confirm the delivery date and the quote. He is German and his English is not really good. Beware of money orders! I fell for one a couple of years ago. At least they were so "nice" they wanted to pay upfront, so I received three postal money orders for the same amount. I got suspicious and showed them to a postmaster who confirmed they were fake.

Hello, The same happens to me and I get the same answer from this guy. For me it's a scam.I wanted to contact proz when I saw this forum. Thanks you confirmed my thoughts. Véronique
Hello, I have received a similar message from a German person . He sent me the document to translate and when I saw it, it was an exact copy as the one I had received previously in another "dodgy" job offer. So I have decided to ignore the whole thing!!

A real client would never even mention any disabilities, unless the topic of the translation refers to a specific disability and the client offers him-/herself as a reference source. Everything else is a guaranteed scam.

I almost fell for it as well. I just told the guy that I did not accept Money Orders for payment. I am still waiting for his answer. I was just wondering if the file he sent (in English) could be a hazard (phishing? Trojan Horse?) for computers? For safety I am scanning my entire computer right now.
Hello everyone, I received the same messages from the same person, but with it being my 1st job, I didn't really act on the few suspicions that I had and carried on with the job.. The person actually signed a PO for me, confirming the project and all. Should I simply cut all contact or should I tell him I am withdrawing from the project? ... Have a nice day!
The messages he sent carry all the signs of an advanced payment scam | Nov 8, 2013 |
Hello Ameline, I cannot confirm if this person is a scammer or not, but the messages he sent carry all the signs of an advanced payment scam, as listed on http://www.proz.com/about/translator-scam-alerts/#advance_payment_overpayment_scam . See more Hello Ameline, I cannot confirm if this person is a scammer or not, but the messages he sent carry all the signs of an advanced payment scam, as listed on http://www.proz.com/about/translator-scam-alerts/#advance_payment_overpayment_scam . The selected payment method and claiming disabilities (and stating a surgery is scheduled) are dead giveaways of this kind of scam. If you have started the translation and would rather complete it in order to complete your side of the agreement, there wouldn't be much harm in doing so. Note that it is likely you will receive a payment of more money than agreed upon, and will subsequently be asked to return the extra to an associate of the outsourcer. If that happens, you will know beyond doubt that this was a scam. On another note, welcome to ProZ.com and site forums! I hope this reply helps. If you need help about anything you can post in the forums or submit a support request to contact site staff directly. Best regards, Alejandro ▲ Collapse

I don't agree with Alejandro that there would be "no harm" in finishing the job. It would be a complete waste of your time. I wouldn't even bother telling this guy you're not doing the job. He's so busy scamming other people he won't even notice, and the normal rules of courtesy don't apply to people like him.
The mention of an uncommon condition that makes it impossible for him to pay you directly and that someone else is paying is a clear sign of scam. The idea behind mentioning a severe ilness, accident, robbery, kidnapping, or sudden attack of syphilis is to call upon your good heart and cooperate. Simple mental mechanics! Cease all contact. Good luck!
