I received the following e-mail. The sender sent it to me after looking me up on PROZ and checking my profile.

I have checked with a friend in London. This is a SCAM, so be careful.

I post it here simply as a 'heads up' to my fellow translators. Notice that in the 'Positions' section there is a listing for translators.

"in advance" Aug 12, 2011

"In advance" is the key to the whole thing. What employer pays in advance? This immediately sets off all sirens.

Where's the scam? Aug 12, 2011

The job offer does look a little to good to be true, but where's the scam? How are they going to try to extract money from you? For instance, we all know about the Nigerian scam where they send a worthless check and then ask for a refund, which, by the way, no one has to be in a hurry to send. But how could they scam you with this offer?

This scammer can't even keep his story straight!! Aug 12, 2011

The letter is supposedly from LangHam Hotel London but the scammer slipped up here:
"All payments of salary after assumption of duty in Marriott Hotel London "

They can't even keep their scam story straight in the first e-mail.

Of course if you fall for their scam - you will have to pay a fee in advance to their agency - or for some diplomatic document, etc.

I got the same letter sent to me through ProZ e-mail.

Henry Hinds - Where's the scam? Aug 13, 2011

Henry Hinds wrote:

Henry, 'Where's the scam?', you ask....

1 - The author's profile - PROZ Profile #1445204 - langhamhotel11 no longer exists.
This seems odd, considering the author had just sent work related messages.

2 - 2 out of 3 e-mail addresses are fake. The third is from Gmail.
A little generic for a corporation, don't you think?

3 - The phone numbers are fakes.

4 - The IP address (41.138.190.214) comes up as being located in Lagos, Nigeria.

So, where is the scam? To be honest, I did not get far enough into the process to find out.
But, to me at least, the whole thing seems a bit suspicious....

Besides, consider the positions available listed in the e-mail.
I'm sure that there are many, many qualified people right in London, UK or at least within the EC who could be employed by the Langham.

The UK, and indeed the whole EC have been having the same employment problems we have here in the U.S. Why 'Import' someone from outside the continent of Europe?

Thanks for explanation Aug 13, 2011

Maybe it is the advance salary payment and then they ask for a refund. Like I say, no one has to be in a hurry to send it. Since I'm not interested I have not verified the information that you have, which turns out to be fake. But it does seem a bit strange. Wouldn't a job applicant expect to have a personal meeting with the employer (scammer) before being hired? That would be dangerous for the scammer.

On another note, here where I am, people are being hired by fake companies for a job that involves crossing the border and without their knowledge, their cars are being loaded with dope. Then some of them get caught. Now that's pretty scary.

Hi everyone,

I have received the same email from "Indeed" Job Alert for Intercontinental Hotels jobs in Qatar. It is the same email with a slight difference in the salary offered and the fact that this offer is coming from Intercontinental Hotels Qatar for LANGHAM HOTEL LONDON makes you doubtful and skeptical.

Thank you for having posted this scam, it is very helpful!

Now this is very elaborate. It is done on letter head paper from Langham. The addresses for these people and the places they work check out. I am a Google nut. I google everything. I couldn't sleep this morning, racking my brain as to how I was going to come up with this money to be able to change my life and I started finding little things, like the area codes etc for the phone numbers. And so many other people have had similar
letters some with the same Alex Facey(who actually has a profile on Linkd in but I don't know if it is the same person) but some with totally different names. So I decided to email through the actual website to get my answers. Still waiting for that reply but everything else is pointing to a SCAM!! I am so disappointed it isn't a real offer, but am so relieved that I GOOGLE! It has saved me many times,I guess this time it took me longer because I wanted it to be true..
