Virtually all my customers pay me by transfer. It incurs no fees throughout the EU and is quick and simple.
A couple of my UK customers still pay by cheque, but they're pretty antiquated now (cheques, not the customers).

There was a long discussion about countries that charge for bank transfers and others that do not. I didn't pick "bank transfer" because the fees here in the US are hefty. Otherwise it would obviously be the easiest.

For me anyway, banks charge like wounded bulls to receive money into Brazilian accounts. PayPal is painless and its easy to transfer the funds to any type of account here, and I can also leave money in PayPal to make purchases from overseas.

I do not expect my customers to come to my place anyway nor am I going to spend time going over to their premises (especially if they are abroad) to collect the money. If they or I did for smaller amounts, the price of transportation and time waisted would make it more expensive than any other means of payment. Besides, what would I do with the cash afterwards? Take it to the bank, during banking hours, wait for my turn and deposit the lot on my account!

My preferred method used to be bank transfer. All of my clients are from abroad, and most of them used to pay the transfer fees. But I have recently switched to Paypal. The reason: somebody abused my bank account and tried to buy airplane tickets to travel from X to Canada, for an amount of several thousand US dollars. Now I'm using Paypal, which is safer because I don't have to provide any bank details to anyone. I used to hate using Paypal for the fees, but I have learned that if my clients us... One of my clients was surprised that, having extensively used Paypal for other translators, nobody had ever told them about eCheck.

If the amount is below 500 usd, I prefer paypal as fee is lower than bank transfer but if more than 500 usd, I use bank transfer. Most of times, client determines payment method.

A check drawn in dollars on a U.S. bank is always best for me since there are no fees.
For clients abroad, it depends. A few of them have U.S. checking accounts, so that simplifies things. Bank transfers are fine if the client is willing to cover the fees. Otherwise I prefer Moneybookers or, as a last resort, Paypal. The last time I looked into this, Moneybookers' fees were lower than Paypal's.
