Bio

Hello, my
name is Ivar Bakke. I am a 62-year-old Norwegian who would like to turn his
passionate hobby into a job. I would like to translate English and German texts
into Norwegian.

Relevant
experience with German and English language:

I regard myself
as a passionate reader of English and German Literature, and have occasionally
translated texts from English and German into Norwegian on my
blog. I’ve
published several texts there in both
English and Norwegian versions, which makes it easy for
you to make a comparison. As for the German texts I’ve translated into
Norwegian, you could make a corresponding evaluation
here or here. In each case, the articles have hyperlinks to
the original text.

I was a
columnist for the German online magazine «Morgenwelt, Magazin für Wissenschaft
und Kultur», and for many years a book reviewer for the Norwegian newspaper
«Nationen» and the weekly «Dag og Tid». More recently, I’ve reduced this to
just occasionally reviewing those books I wish to enthusiastically share with
others. And, by using my blog, “
Man of Letters”, I probably now reach more readers
than I did writing for the newspapers.

I was a
dairy farmer for 25 years, a curse that may turn out to be a blessing,
regarding the experience it gave me in the realm of practical life. But also,
in linguistic terms (building and machine maintenance, for instance).

For the
last ten years or so, I have been earning my income as a freelance transcriber
of interviews. These are mainly in Norwegian, and largely produced by
scientists using interviews as the primary source in their research. It is an
interesting way of learning about different occupations and walks ‘of life, but
also of honing your language skills in different specialised fields.

As a late
bloomer, I took a BA in history, and studied International Relations for a
year. And, last but not least, I am happily married to my German wife, who
works as a schoolteacher in English and German here in Bodø, Norway. She shares
my interest in language and speaks fluent Norwegian, but at home, we speak
German.
