GMail Oct 22, 2007

To answer the question about GMail and return receipts: I don't think that GMail supports this. What I found was an autoresponder (i.e., out-of-office reply), but that's it.

The best way to go about it when using GMail is to BCC another mail account, if you have one.

I only do this when delivering a translation. Oct 22, 2007

I always used to ask for confirmation of receipt in the e-mail, but some of my clients tend to forget. For my peace of mind, I need to know that my work was received. Otherwise, I don't bother. I can't imagine my clients would think it's an invasion of privacy in this limited regard.

BCCing yourself does not allow to make sure your e-mail got through.
In case your e-mail does not get through, there might be more than one reason, including:
- your mail server is deficient
- the customer's mail server is deficient
In the first case, yes, BCCing yourself will give you a hint that something does not work. In the second case, you will never get to know about it.

That's why I don't understand all your answers about BCC and Anthony's : BCC is no use in ensuring a customer got your e-mail, and saying that it's up to the customer to decide wether he acknowledges receipt or not is fine, but if he never gets your e-mail, then he has actually nothing to chose...

The only way to make sure a customer got an e-mail is to get a confirmation, be it automatic, by e-mail or by phone.

Agree with Margreet and Sophie Oct 23, 2007

I do request a read receipt for important e-mails (as listed by Margreet) and quite often for new contacts or older addresses to make sure my e-mail reaches them.

I usually receive a read receipt from my clients and/or a short e-mail.

I think it's really rude Oct 23, 2007

Hello all,

I personally think it's quite rude, and only use it very occasionally - when confirming delivery times and pricing from my end, for example. If I want to make sure a customer has received a translation, I usually ask them to confirm receipt by responding to my email with a quick "All received, thanks!", or I give them a quick call to check.

Hello all,

I personally think it's quite rude, and only use it very occasionally - when confirming delivery times and pricing from my end, for example. If I want to make sure a customer has received a translation, I usually ask them to confirm receipt by responding to my email with a quick "All received, thanks!", or I give them a quick call to check.

In my opinion, read receipts are just another way for people to avoid communicating on a personal level. I don't enjoy working with agencies who give the impression that they would rather I was a machine - and quite frankly, some of them DO. We've all worked with people who send emails without salutations, inform you of new jobs rather than enquiring as to your availability, refuse to acknowledge receipt of translations, and don't reply to queries. Similarly, some agencies seem to view read receipts as a form of reply, and will request them on every single e-mail. As I gave up accounting for my whereabouts to someone else when I became a freelancer, I ignore them as a matter of course. Instead, I consider it a matter of professional courtesy to reply to every email I receive personally and as soon as it's convenient FOR ME to do so.

MessageTAG Oct 23, 2007

Hi everybody!

I use MSGTAG (http://www.msgtag.com/home/) in some cases, such as debt collection and so on, when I want to be sure that my message has been viewed by the recipient. In MSGTAG(+) version, you can even turn off the notifying message to the recipient, so s/he does not even notice that you have received the automatic receipt. In the free version, the notification message cannot be turned off.

So it doesn't even give me as a recipient that choice?

Yes, you are right. And therefore, as I mentioned before, I only use this for the people who really do not deserve any privacy respect, not for ordinary correspondences. It is actually a spy gadget!!

No but I ask for confirmation Nov 3, 2007

I don't appreciate receiving emails requesting automatic receipts. I make sure that I confirm receipt of every pertinent email I receive (document to be translated, PO, etc..). Likewise, I request for a confirmation email for every important document I send. I believe this works well than configuring your mail to ask for a read receipt for every email that you send. That would really be annoying for the receiver.
