Is it possible to make a sdxliff from a MS word file by translating with WFP?

Hi experts,

I have the latest version (3.4.5) of Wordfast Pro which can handle sdxliff files also. I have received a MS word file from one of my clients and she wants me to deliver her sdxliff file.
I can't find out the way to make a sdxliff file from a MS Word file by means of Wordfast Pro, although, of course, I can translate it through it. Could you explain it, if it is possible to make a sdxliff file from a MS Word file at all?

You can't create an SDLXLIFF file from a DOC/DOCX file using WFP. Only Trados 2009+ can generate an SDLXLIFF file from a DOC/DOCX file. You can translate an existing SDLXLIFF file in WFP, which will produce a translated SDLXLIFF file. If you want to convert DOC/DOCX to SDLXLIFF or convert SDLXLIFF to DOC/DOCX, then you need to use Trados 2009+.

Hi Chopra,

SDLXLIFF can be created by MateCat, too. In MateCat are many filters for conversion files into SDLXLIFF.

SDLXLIFF could be translated by WFP.

I made a short test of MateCat with another workflow, there was only import of XLF in a year 2013:

After a translation I downloaded translated SDLXLIFF:

SDLXLIFF != XLIFF Sep 13, 2015

I haven't delved into this at depth and I don't plan to, but I'm pretty sure that matecat generates xliff, not sdlxliff. Sdlxliff is a subtype of xliff, SDL's own variant on the public filetype standard. I'm sure there is some interoperability, but if a client specifically state that they want sdlxliff, then the only good (safe) option is to generate it using Studio. Then you can probably translate the sdlxliff with another tool.

I thank you for suggesting another option in this respect. I'll try it. I think that one can also use the demo version of Trados Studio to make a sdlxliff file from a MS Word (.doc or .docx) file.

MateCat does produce SLXLIFF Sep 13, 2015

Well, it requires only a little delving to get the answer: yes, MateCat does export SDLXLIFF files that Trados (2015) accepts as its own format and that Trados is happy to export again as a final file.

Simply load the file into MateCat and "start" the translation. Then, on the translator screen, select "Preview" and then "SDLXLIFF".

MateCat appears to segment the SDLXLIF the same way as Trados, too.

The only issue is that MateCat performs pre-translation against its own TM (even if you deselect machine translation), so the SDLXLIFF file is "pre-translated"... not with souce=target but with source=fuzzy-match. Hence my question this morning in the Trados forum about how to clear all target fields in Trados. This is not a problem in CAT tools that can read SDLXLIFF's segment statuses (such pre-translated segments are marked as unconfirmed), but it may be an issue for CAT tools that can't (e.g. OmegaT, with or without the Okapi filter).

There doesn't seem to be an option in MateCat to ensure that the exported SDLXLIFF file is pre-translated as source=target. Unknown segments are pre-translated source=target (and here is where MateCat blunders a bit -- if the source field contains a line feed, the target field doesn't (which is not a problem unless you're using a CAT tool that relies on the target field)).
