I try to add a word doc with Trados external style. However, no matter whether I check "Ignore bilingual files" in the Formats for doc files or not, the result is that text with Trados external style is not excluded from translation. I know that it will work if I replace external style with hidden text, but I found no solution for internal style (no way to make it convert into tags).

No support for legacy Trados styles in WFP Oct 23, 2013

AFAIK, there's no support for the legacy Trados styles in WFP. If you want portions of texts in a Word document not to be imported for translation in WFP, just format them as hidden text in Word. If they already have a style attached to them, it's easily done in one go with find/replace. You just have to remember unhiding them in the translated document.

I know that, I still try to figure out how to handle Trados internal style (red) for tags. Is there any way for that?

Not that I know (with WFP). The tw4winInternal style is meant to be handled by Trados Workbench or Wordfast Classic. Trados Workbench is now abandonware, but Wordfast Classic is still very much alive...

Well, since things are moving towards a non-Word environment, I think it would be a good thing if WFP could also handle these

We are moving towards a non-Workbench environment.

I still keep Classic for these documents (and also because it's very good), as well as others keep old Trados. But it is definitely outdated.

Check the ongoing survey on Kevin Lossner's blog:

I'd say rumors of the death of Word-based translation environments are greatly exaggerated

Interesting Oct 23, 2013

To be honest, I see no reason (or technical difficulty) why WFP should not be able to deal with these styles. After all, DVX, MetaTexis, WFC, etc, can do it.

Likely explanation: not a high priority.

Everything is possible, but vendors have their own agenda and different priorities. I could imagine implementing support for a competitor's legacy format isn't high on Wordfast's agenda (for WFP), especially since support for that format already exists in one of their product (WFC).

IMO, there are many more important features missing from WFP, and the priority should be given to them.

Found a solution Oct 25, 2013

Convert doc file to ttx and segment it with Trados.
Import to WFP. Delete all copied target segments if needs must with Ctrl+Shift+A.
