Swedish term

vikter på upp till 70 ton

Swedish to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
The text contains many references to "ton" in plural, like:
"D-värdet är 260 kN och rekommenderas för bruttovikter på fordonståg upp till 70 ton på dåliga vägar och 150 ton på bra vägar."

Translator suggests: "...weights of up to 70 ton..."

We are debating whether "ton" should have a plural "s" in UK English?

This question is not about ton/tonne, because the client termbase already specifies which to use.

But I wonder if there is any manual of style or general understanding whether the plural "s" can be omitted or not.
Proposed translations (English)
5 +1 gross weights up to 70 tonnes
5 weighs anything up to 70 tons

English is weird, mind. I weigh 70 kilos but 11 stone... :-)
Christopher Schröder May 11, 2017:
It has to be tons. Ton is colloquial spoken English only. No debate.

gross weights up to 70 tonnes

Av sammanhanget förstår man att det är bruttovikter det handlar om. För att undvika missförstånd bör metriskt ton skrivas tonne(s). Se webbreferens nedan. Ton betecknar ett gammalt engelskt mått på 1016 kg.
Peer comment(s):

agree ortholingua : Precis. However, one may also write metric ton, which is acceptable both in British and in American English.

As Chris said. Ton is a slang way of saying £100
