español term

sonrisa de circumstancias

español al inglés Arte/Literatura Poesía y literatura structure
Context:
"Le apetece ... unas madejicas de cordero?"
La mujer traga saliva e intenta dibujar una SONRISA DE CIRCUMSTANCIAS con sus labios pintados de rosa intenso.

I get the general idea of putting on a brave face, but my brain is fried and I can't come up with anything nice. This is a noir style book for teenagers, from Spain.

Many thanks in advance!

Discussion

Nedra Rivera Huntington (asker) Jun 12, 2007:
Thanks all! Many thanks for all your help. I think in this context "forced" works best with the presence of "intenta", but other suggestions would clearly work in a different context.

or even "makes a brave attempt at a polite smile" ...

Note from asker:
Thanks, Clare. I was stronly considering this, but went with "forced" in the context. Too bad we can't split the points! You can find the madejicas in an imaginary (?) bar in Zaragoza, La Comadreja Parda, of all places!
