It in my translation refers therapy. If my translation is correct, the original author of the text would have done better if he had inserted another verb: и причиняет торпидность к ней

: Carole, the verb причинять is totally inappropriate here. Its closest English equivalent is "to inflict": you can inflict pain, wounds, injury, damage, loss, evil, but not a weak response to treatment as in this case.
