To Angela That's my doubt as well. If you clear something out, you'd use "dell'altrui". I just wonder if there's some other meaning. Unfortunately, it's all artspeak so this sentence is not connected (really) with the sentence before or after it.
I'll post them anyway, just to show you what I mean:
"Le modulazioni decorative, gli orditi di tappeti visti mille volte, le orlature di vesti e di arabeschi, l�al di l� della costa che � ormai un al di qua in una confusionaria fiera delle anime, entrano invece nel corpo di questo pittore a darsi in canone naturale, suo malgrado a gioco forza, in un animo atavicamente padano. E� cos� che contrariamente all�abitudine odierna, in cui ogni incontro con culture terze significa soltanto uno sgomberarsi all�altrui malincerta presenza, qui, si diceva, questo non accade. Il pittore � cos� concentrato da s� stesso, d�aver trovato un nuovo baricentro interpretativo e culturale piuttosto favorevole.

another note I guess the problem (for me!) with the sentence is the concept of an encounter with others that eliminates those others. See what I mean?
