इन्सान सोचता तो बहुत कुछ है।

Non-PRO Hindi to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
This is the answer to the following question

मुसाफ़िर: अच्छा, तो आप डॉक्टर बनेंगी?
सुनीता: देखते हैं। इन्सान सोचता तो बहुत कुछ है।

I found the translation: "Of course, one has many intentions."

Do you think it suits or is there a better version. Is this a "अगर...तो" construction? Is it an idiom?

Thanks in advance!

Man proposes God disposes = इन्शान सौचता है, इश्वर करता है.
In Gujarati: dharyu to dhani nu j thay = धार्यु तो धणी नु ज थाय.

Things are not as we think about.

Thanks for the explanation. I didn't know that अगर...तो can also mean "though..but" and now the second part of the sentence also becomes clear s.th. like ...a lot (unexpected things) happen. Is this interpretation correct? If so, I would prefer this, since the the Hindi equivalent for "Man proposes, God disposes" is a different one, even if this is what is meant here.
Ramesh Bhatt Apr 21, 2011:
इन्सान सोचता तो बहुत कुछ है। Yes, it is "Though...but" construction. And your "Of course, one has many intentions." will apply here. It has actually the tinge of "Man proposes, Allah disposes".
Literary: Though a human being delibrates/plans/considers... a lot...
It is not an idiom.

Man proposes, God disposes.

This is an idiomatic manner of conveying the sense that things don't always work out as they were planned.

I have presented the translation for whole sentence, including the feelings, that appear in it. As it is a part of a conversation and not a single general sentence. Hence I am proposing you to use this Translation for your complete second sentence.
