German term

bespielen

German to English Bus/Financial IT (Information Technology) Customer Experience
Unser Tochterfirma XXX unterstützt Unternehmen dabei, die wichtigsten Touchpoints mit hoher Qualität zu bespielen.

The context is Customer Experience Management by a consulting company that specialises in SAP.

I haven't seen 'bespielen' in this context before and am struggling to work out what it means. There is an existing English translation of this sentence, but it doesn't make any sense, so I am looking to improve upon it.

Discussion

Katy L Dean (asker) May 2, 2020:
Thanks Björn - yes, that definitely makes the most sense in this context.
Björn Vrooman May 2, 2020:
Hello Katy "Bespielen," in this context, (in my opinion) means getting your brand message out, i.e., "deliver your message across...touchpoints."

It's exactly what they say here: https://thecoopagency.com/capabilities/

Similarly:
"Creating a consistent brand message across all marketing touchpoints helps customers get to know you and depend on you."
https://baileygp.com/article/brand-consistency/

"It’s important to communicate consistently across a variety of tried and tested marketing touchpoints to get your marketing message across to the new target, after all you don’t propose marriage on the first date, you have to demonstrate your suitability and win them over."
https://www.contentredmarketingsolutions.co.uk/post/understa...

Not sure this isn't too long. I quite like leverage/make the most/maximize, e.g.:

disagree Liane Poost : No, "bespielen" clearly doesn't mean, to make the most of sth.

agree Kphred : Our subsidiary XXX helps companies better record the most important touchpoints. (make better recordings of the most important touchpoints) This is assuming that a "touchpoint" refers to an interaction with the business by a customer.

I believe the verb is being used here to express the 'approach' the consultants will be taking to 'address' a certain task or effect a solution...

German term (edited): mit Qualität bespielen

deliver quality

Something along the following lines should work here:

...we help companies to deliver/offer quality [or quality service/results] through their most important/main channels/touchpoints...

„etwas mit Qualität bespielen“ is marketing lingo meaning to bring/deliver quality. This is not really one of the general dictionary meanings but is not uncommon in marketing/business texts. A couple of usage examples which might make the meaning clearer:

In both examples the phrase means to deliver quality. In the first example it is about blogs offering consistently high-quality content. The second example is about how difficult it is to offer the same high quality through all marketing channels.

Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : It's good that you've thought about "mit Qualität" as well. Most of the answers don't, so in my opinion they don't fully work.

hit/cover/execute

Touchpoints 'bespielen' is idiomatic usage in German so we have to make sure it doesn't sound too pedestrian in English either. Compare with this:
"According to Moore, Duet is due for an update in the first half of this year. Version 1.5, Moore says, will introduce scalable business processes that hit all the touch points triggered by a single event, such as hiring a new employee or altering an order-to-cash process." https://www.infoworld.com/article/2658853/sea-change-at-sap....

My take on this is that you "serve high quality content at the most important touchpoints". It's a bit of a twist but in my opinion captures the essence.

Yes, that is also good. To avoid rockiness with their high quality, I though make the most of would cover both bases. Happy translating!
Note from asker:
I wondered if it would be something like this. My suggestion so far was 'Our subsidiary, XXX, helps customers leverage the most important touchpoints.'
Peer comment(s):

agree Kartik Isaac : Definitely makes sense here.

Like in "global player".

They want to be present at every touchpoint. They want to be there. To participate. To act.
