My impression from the context is that this is about different critical approaches to biography or to the study of historical figures, debate over which sort of representations are more accurate, etc. - in that case, I think discredited (as in, no longer accepted as valid) would be the right word.

Sorry, I\'d overlooked the part about East vs. West Germans. Could \"Biographien\" be more generally referring to life stories, as opposed to written works? As in, people\'s own life stories are not given the same importance they once were?
