la directrice

français vers anglais Technique / Génie Navires, navigation, marine discussion of stability

... (mathematical formulation)

I am wondering if there is a direct equivalent of directrice in English. The text dates from 1985.

La flottaison should be understood as waterline.

Albert Gomperts (asker) Aug 10, 2017:
Thanks for the suggestion! After googling I find that Wikipedia has three directrix -related articles. This in particular is suggestive: "The generatrix of a cylinder, a limiting case of a cone, is a line that is kept parallel to some axis"
It seems to me therefore that "generatrix" is the word I'm looking for.

ikewise, directrix curves of the ruled surface can be determined by means of the dual sphere spline interpolation algorithm
for:

GDT also offers 'base line' which is more descriptive, less technical:

Merci, Bohy ! I believe that the principle of the directrix is the same in both cases: it is the line that is rotated to create a cylinder or cone.
