French term

Tuyauteries RPE noyées

French to English Tech/Engineering Nuclear Eng/Sci
Hello,

I am translating documents for the sub-contracting of engineering work for a nuclear power plant. I am struggling with the following:

Tuyauteries RPE noyées dans les raiders et les planchers des bâtiments de l’îlot nucléaire.

Does this mean 'submerged pipes'?

Thank you

embedded RPE pipes

:)

By the way, I think you meant radiers and not raiders

I have to admit that I took RPE to mean reinforced polyethylene...

but with some help from my colleagues : nuclear island vent &
drain (RPE)

Here's a reference : http://www.weirpowerindustrial.com/pdf/Sebim Nuclear POSRV.p...

See page 31
Peer comment(s):

agree Claire Cox : RPE is the nuclear island vent and drain system according to AFNOR; yes, the text actually mentions the ilot nucléaire and it's one of the PWR plant system three-letter codes given in the back of the AFNOR/Framatome glossary.

thanks Claire, but are you sure about the RPE bit?

thanks
agree MoiraB : yes, though you may need to explain RPE, as per Claire's explanation (embedded vent and drain pipes or something)

it's done thanks
agree Bourth (X) : Presumably readership is familiar with the PWR designer's trigrammes, but putting the English in full is the best bet. Got family down the road from Hinkley Point: not happy.

submerged pipes of Rotation Pump Element (=RPE)

Yes, according to:

IX - Dictionnaire Général de la Technique Industrielle (Fr.-Ang.)
(2. Auflage 2000) - By: Dr. -Ing. Richard Ernst (Page 744, column 2):-

verb- noyer - means : to become submerged/drown

noyées - is its past participle - for plural.

Also see 2nd result from top of the link below:-

RPE = Rotation Pump Element.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Richard Hedger : "Tuyauteries noyées dans les radiers et les planchers" means "pipes concreted within the mass of the foundation slabs or floor slabs"

disagree MoiraB : wrong context

Reference:

Nuclear Vent and Drain System (RPE [NVDS]) form part of the third containment barrier. They ensure containment isolation at the containment penetrations (for the TEG [GWPS], the sections concerned are those connected to the pressuriser and the Reactor Building primary effluent tank).
In addition, the Gaseous Waste Processing System limits the hydrogen concentration in systems connected to the TEG [GWPS] in order to prevent the formation of explosive mixtures. It also treats gaseous waste in order to minimise operator exposure to radiation, and ensures that activity released to the environment complies with the authorised discharge limits and is as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).
2.
FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The RPE [NVDS] collects all the liquid waste produced both inside and outside the containment and part of the gaseous waste in the reactor building, and transports it to the associated storage and treatment facilities prior to monitoring and discharge.

agree MoiraB : but suspect this is a translation even though it's for the UK PWR project (http://tinyurl.com/33yj7tw), as Areva/EDF are the source - and also because the French abbreviations REP/TEG are mentioned first.
