French term

L’équivalence de garanties...

French to English Bus/Financial Insurance
Hi Everyone,

I'd appreciate any help you can give with translating this phrase. Unfortunately, I can't offer a specific context because the project involves translating decontextualised phrases on a variety of topics from different websites. Having done some research, I believe it's an insurance term and I understand what it means in French but I'm not sure how to translate it into English. Is there an equivalent English term? The entire phrase is as follows:

L’équivalence de garanties et la nécessité de comparer les offres d’assurance

Thank you for your help! :)

French term (edited): équivalence de garanties

equivalent coverage

We have no information about the type of insurance your text refers to, but in France at least, équivalence de garanties would be required by the bank lending you money to buy a property if you decide to take out an insurance policy from someone else than your bank. See here for instance: https://www.argusdelassurance.com/institutions/assurance-emp...

So low confidence level since we don't really know the type of insurance discussed by your text, plus I can't find any example in English that would be relevant to loan insurance, but “equivalent coverage” seems to be used in other insurance classes, in North America anyway.

Examples:

Section 12 AAC 02.530 - [Effective 11/28/2019] Standards for equivalent coverage
An insurer issuing equivalent coverage under AS 08.88.172(c)(2) shall hold a certificate of authority issued unde... All activities contemplated under AS 08.88.172 must be covered. The insurance must meet the minimum coverage standards of... and..., except that

I've looked at this again after your note and AllegroTrans's peer comment. I have been able to find examples of "equivalent cover" in UK insurance text - not sure why they didn't appear during my initial search:

"offering GPs the equivalent cover that our hospital colleagues have enjoyed for a generation"
https://www.bma.org.uk/collective-voice/committees/general-p...

"Clergy should, however, check before purchasing this policy whether they have equivalent cover under any other legal expenses insurance policy."

"In our view, this is a ‘no brainer’ insurance solution which provides quality and equivalent cover, or improved cover"

etc.

... UK insurance texts...
Note from asker:
Hi, Thank you so much! This is brilliant. From the examples you've given me, it seems the concept exists in North America but I've never come across it in the UK before. Now at least I know there's an official term for it (in North America). Thank you.
Thank you very much for both the UK and US examples. I think I'll go with the US term because the agency suggested they'll probably opt for US English at the proofreading stage. Thanks again!
Peer comment(s):

agree AllegroTrans : Yes, but "cover" for UK English

I wondered about this and found only one UK example (Scottish tender), so decided to use only N A examples./Looked at this again after your peer comment and finally found some UK examples with "equivalent cover".
agree Yvonne Gallagher : equivalent cover as AT says

Thanks, Yvonne/Indeed - I've now added new examples.
neutral B D Finch : In this case, I think it must be "equivalence", not "equivalent". Also, in the UK, coverage is associated with paint.

See comment to AllegroTrans and examples./I've added new examples.

equivalence of cover

Garantie means cover in an insurance context.

Note from asker:
Hi, Thank you very much for your help! I wondered if I could just say something like that but insurance is not one of my areas of specialism and I had no idea if 'equivalence of cover(age)' was the appropriate expression in English. I've never come across the concept in Britain.
Peer comment(s):

agree AllegroTrans : The only thing I can think of, but hey...translating translating decontextualised phrases on a variety of topics from different websites, how reliable is that?

Thanks. Actually, for once I think we have enough context.
agree Timothy Rake : Equivalence of (in) “coverage” I think is more appropriate

agree B D Finch : Cover sounds better to me than "coverage". I associate "coverage" with paint rather than insurance.
