French term

exalter

French to English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng système de spectroscopie
Hi,

Should I simply use "emphasize" here? or is it something more technical?

"Cette solution permet d'exalter la réception de lumière émise par les particules, que cette émission soit due aux propriétés de luminescence ou de diffusion optique des particules, ou de fluorescence de celles-ci sous l'effet d'une lumière excitatrice."

Thank you

Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : This seems likely in the context, but your explanation isn't exactly helpful. What about a dictionary reference or sample sentence? // I meant something proving that "exalter" means "enhance" - I haven't seen it used that way before.

Light reception is also dependent on the orientation or angle of the leaf. Vertical orientation of leaves enhances light reception at low sun angles during early ... // I read "exalter" as "increase" therefore "enhance".
agree Tony M : Yes, it's often used in this way (that sounds rather pretentious to EN ears), on things like descriptions of dishes, for example.
