There are 8 exits on the plane. 4 doors, two on each side and 4 windows exits over the wings. Each door has a detachable slide that can be used as a raft.
My dictionary suggests raft as a flat float (usually made of logs or planks) that can be used for transport or as a platform for swimmers which does not seem to fit in this context. What exactly does it mean?

Rubber dinghy
These slides are used if the plane has made an emergency landing and people slide down them to the ground. What is meant in this context is that the slides can be detached and placed in water, where they will float and can be used as a boat.

an inflatable boat-like thing
The slides are inflatable when they open. Then, the passengers can sit on them until help arrives. Rafts can be made of all sorts of things besides logs or planks--like barrels or balloons. Usually not as sleek as a boat and not intended to be really sailable, just to float and carry some sort of cargo.

New Fabric Introduced
Late 1995 marked the introduction of polyurethane coated fabric (PCF) into the General Aviation life raft market in the U.S. by RFD (It's been available on the marine market for some time). BFGoodrich, RFD and Air Cruisers have also opted for this type fabric for their new rafts. This material offers some potential advantages over traditional neoprene rubber.
