English term

jumper

English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Elevators and Escalators maintenance
Guidelines for workers in Elevators and Escalators maintenance:

II. Tools - Only company-issued jumpers are to used. Lost jumpers
must be reported to the office. Damaged jumpers must be repaired.

Can't find any suitable interpretation of the word "jumper" as a tool used in elevator maintenance.

The closest I found is "a steel bar for drilling", but I'm not convinced in this context - There are also the jumpers used in electricity but they are not tools, are they?

Any idea? synonym, short explanation, clue...

Many thanks in advance

(Sorry: key!) But I still have this niggling little doubt that these are in fact electrical; I wonder if they are some kind of mech. device, perhaps to block a lift cage in its shaft, for example. I really think client clarification is essential here
Tony M Nov 4, 2006:
Electrical jumpers would certainly be ket safety over-ride facilities, and yes, WOULD be counted under 'tools'; they might not be cables as such, but could also be rigid bar-type devices, for example — think meaty, think safety-crucial.

when the smoke clears :-) I think you would be best to ask your client why it is listed under tools. while I agree with willmatter, this is something that should be client-authorised. enjoy your weekend!!! :-)

I hardly think the company would care WHAT the technicians are wearing, but they might well insist on issuing their own electrical jumpers - electrical circuit-jumpers...

How silly - I didn't realise you had posted it as English MONO...

"Jumper cables" are used by electrical technicians for bypassing switches etc., when working on all manner of electrical equipment; they are also used on multiple-units trains to connect on-board electrical equipment from one unit to another. They are either the thick cable(s) you may see suspended at the end of a multiple unit train set, or between sets joined from one set to the next. In some cases nowadays, they are routed through the couplers themselves.

agree juvera : "The use of jumpers, bridges or shunts (generically referred to as 'jumpers') to short out or defeat a safety circuit...Personnel must be trained in the use of jumpers." All about jumpers here (5.9): www.osh.dol.govt.nz/order/catalogue/ipp/liftscode.pdf

OK, without more information this is just above a guess.

A jumper might be short for 'jumper cable' so this would be the first choice.

Second, it might be a company-issued uniform, but I cannot see this listed under 'tools'.

My guess would be the first choice. To bypass safety devices, you might use such a cable to allow you to power the device for repair work. I can see the company only wanting repairment to use THEIR cables as others might not carry enough current, perhaps contributing to a fire. This is something the company REALLY wants to avoid.

My thoughts from the USA.

circuit/clip jumpers

I can't say I'm an expert but I found this web site which might be useful.

agree ErichEko ⟹⭐ : You are right. Your link said that "Jumpers shall not be used as a diagnostic tool." So, in elevator industry, jumper is regarded as tool, but not for diagnostic purpose. I wonder why use company-issued only. Perhpas safety concerns?
