Multivariate analyses identified the pattern in the faunal data as associated with fluctuating particle size, metals and hydrocarbons concentrations along the surveyed route.
Given the lack of any significant point-source contamination, it is more likely that this relates to natural variation in the physicochemical conditions, largely related to varying water depth and sediment characteristics along the surveyed route and the associated changes in proximity to the XXXX and YYYY nearshore sections.
