English term

complex cosmetic sapphire

English to Arabic Science Mining & Minerals / Gems precious stones
This is what the mobile face is made from. I know the term "sapphire" in Arabic and assume that "complex" here is "murakkab", but have problems explaining the "cosmetic"

Thank you all... ...for being patient and helping me understand the "specific jewellery terminology". Your help in brainstorming was invaluable.
ahmadwadan.com May 23, 2005:
In this case I think the suitable translation would be:

Fuad Yahya May 22, 2005:
If it is specific jewellery terminology, how come it is nowhere to be found on the web except on the client's website? In any case, now that we know what they mean, perhaps we can come up with something.
Non-ProZ.com May 22, 2005:
More info from the client Apparently, "cosmetic complex sapphire refers to the sapphires that are treated as in a jewel. It is specific jewellery terminology which means that the stone has a lot of different faces as in a jewel. This is the client's response to my question.

Closing a question, especially so early in the game, is not wise. Even if it does not help your project, someone may be able to come up with some relevant answer in the future.
Non-ProZ.com May 22, 2005:
You are probably very right on that, as I am coming across some interesting grammar in this brochure as well. What do you suggest? That I close the question without grading, or leave it open until tomorrow when I hopefully get some more information?
Fuad Yahya May 22, 2005:
Based on an extensive web search, "complex cosmetic sapphire" does not seem to be a standard industrial expression. Man-made sapphire is called "synthetic," not "cosmetic." It is possible that the English version is a poor translation from a French text.
Non-ProZ.com May 22, 2005:
Clarificaton regarding what Ahmed has suggested, I would like to clarify that the material from which the mobile phone screen is made is actually the "cosmetic complex sapphire". I have a feeling that by "cosmetic" they mean man-made from smaller chunks of sapphire, but I am not sure. It is Sunday and I can't get in touch with the client. Sorry for the confusion.
Non-ProZ.com May 22, 2005:
Yes, thank you for the correction
Fuad Yahya May 22, 2005:
Do you mean "mobile phone faceplate"?

If you feel you must include the word cosmetic, I would suggest تجميلي, but it may be an overkill.

I am pretty sure the faceplate is nothing but a piece of cheap plastic, not sapphire. It probably is greenish blue, possibly with a decorative pattern, hence "complex cosmetic."

If this is a description for a catalog of faceplates, your role maybe somewhat more complex than your usual role, extending beyond simple translation to copywriting. I would send an email to the client telling them "I feel that I need to exercise some latitude with respect to these descriptive labels for the sake of presentability to the Araic-reading customer." To exercise judicious latitude, you would need access to good pictures in full color.

ياقوت أزرق زخرفي مركب

Notice that ياقوت by itself is not a univocal term. It could mean, among other things, ruby, sapphire, or topaz.

If \"complex cosmetic sapphire\" means \"the stone has a lot of different faces as in a jewel,\" I would suggest:

ياقوت أزرق زخرفي النحت
أو ياقوت أزرق زخرفي التجسـيم
أو ياقوت أزرق هندسي التجسـيم
أو ياقوت أزرق بتجسـيم هندسي

ياقوت الحلي/الزينة المركب

I found some marketing material on what seem to be highly exquisite mobile phone accessories, e.g. "Pure sapphire crystal,
including the largest piece of complex cosmetic sapphire in the world." In that case, I would go for something like this suggestion.

Hi Sam, I think you can use cosmetic as follows:
مُحَلّى بـ
بضم الميم وفتح الحاء وتشديد اللام وفتحها

Best Regards
