opening

Non-PRO English to Arabic Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters opening
That was an opening, by the way.

Someone give a speech about his life's mistakes and the things he regrets doing in hi life. And in the end of it, he said, "That was an opening." Could it be "self criticism"?

Thanks in advance,

Thank you all.
S.J (asker) Jul 18, 2020:
You are right. It should be clarified. It needs more context.
Fuad Yahya Jul 17, 2020:
Also, . . . what was the last thing he said before saying, "That was an opening."
Fuad Yahya Jul 17, 2020:
What did he say after that? That should clarify it.

I believe the writer means it was an 'opening' to the truth about himself. A stage of self-awareness somehow.

What's the tone of the speech? Could it be some sarcastic comic relief at the end? As in "I'm just getting started"?

he may want to say that his mistakes were a chance to learn from his mistakes?
كل هذه الأخطاء والأشياء التي ندمت على فعلها كانت فرصة مناسبة للتعلم منها؟؟؟

There's still much context needed to answer this accurately, but in general and in a situation such as the one you explained, I'd say that the word "opening" would resemble almost exactly what you'd mean by: "فاتحة"؛ as in a opening/source of a chance or other things (start/beginning).
Hope I could help.
Example sentence:

فاتحة خير/فاتحة اتفتحت.
