menschlicher Faktor / menschliche Faktoren / menschliches Versagen Explanation: The last one might be going a bit too far, though. In your context, i.e. the question "Were alarms or displays to recognise or to respond to a condition unavailable or misunderstood?", "human engineering" might also mean that no automatic alert or shutoff systems, procedures or displays existed, so that employees were "left to their own devices" as regards proces/plant monitoring/supervision (manuelle Überwachung?). Human Engineering (menschengerechte Arbeitsplatzgestaltung) Explanation: Der Ausdruck wird, wie viele Sites belegen, meist in Englsich beibehalten, besonders wenn es um Forschung geht. Wie die Definition vom Fraunhofer/Institut zeigt, handelt es sich im weitesten Sinne um die "Berücksichtigung psychologischer und sozialer Voraussetzungen bei der Arbeitsplatzgestaltung". Wenn man diese Definition zu Grunde legt, kann es sich in Deinem Text eigentlich nur um die "Missachtung der Prinzipien einer menschengerechten Arbeitsplatzgestaltung" handeln.
