agree Tony M : Yes, this is the usual term in the UK too. But do note that 'visière' probably means something special --- I'd guess the kind that has an (often folding) glass panel along the front, extedning outwards and downwards @ 45° to catch more smoke...

I agree with you on that but I doubt if we would refer to it in those terms. You see them less & less - they get in the way. You bash your head on them!

agree Sara Freitas : Definitely the term...an extractor hood has no "chimney." It filters and recycles the air. It is one of those flat ones you could install under an over the head cupboard.

thanks Range hoods can be of 2 types - those that vent to the outside and those that filter and recirculate the air. Both types can be attached to the bottom of a cabinet (the vent pipe passes up through the cabinet on the vented ones).
