After reading everyone's contribution I am somewhat convinced that the notion of geek means many different things to many different people. Certainly it is an epithet that creates distance between some and affinity towards others. When a concept is so amorphous as this one appears to be, why bother to seek a translation? It is for this reason that I have selected Sven's rendering.

Die Definition von Geek (englisch: Streber) hat sich über die Jahre beträchtlich verändert. Unten sind ein paar Definitionen des Wortes "Geek", von der ältesten zur neusten. Außer der ersten sind alle noch gebräuchlich.

Eine Person, die lebende Tiere wie Käfer als eine Form der Unterhaltung schluckt. Dies beinhaltet häufig, Hühnern den Kopf abzubeißen.
Eine abfällige Bezeichnung für jemanden mit schwachen sozialen Fähigkeiten, häufig in Verbindung mit hoher Intelligenz. Es wird gemutmaßt, dass viele dieser Leute das Asperger-Syndrom haben.
Eine Person, die sich gerne mit Technologie, Computern und neuen Medien beschäftigt. Vergleichbar mit der klassischen Definition von Hacker.
Eine Person, die sich gerne mit Themen bzw. Problematiken auseinandersetzt, welche abseits des Mainstreams stehen. Dies kann durch die Intensität, Tiefe und Thema ihres Interesse ausgedrückt werden.
Es gibt verschiedene Formen von Geeks. Der Computer-Geek ist der bekannteste, doch praktisch alle Themenfelder und Kulturbereiche haben ihre Geeks. Es gibt politische Geeks, Geeks der Geographie, Geeks der Naturwissenschaften, Anime- und Manga-Geeks, Star-Trek-Geeks, Geeks vieler Farben, Geschlechter und verschiedener Länder.

Tatsächlich muss ein Geek nicht unbedingt schwache soziale Fähigkeiten haben. Einzig und allein die Verhaltensweisen von Geeks auf ihrem Fachgebiet sowie Kommunikation zwischen Geeks ist für Nicht-Geeks meist ziemlich unverständlich.

geek - a word not contained in Collins German Dictionary, neither in WHSmith English Dictionary but in the Dictionary of American slang:
1. A carnival or circus performer, considered a freak, who performs sensationally disgusting acts that a normal person would not, e.g. eating or swallowing live animals. Carnival and some circus use; fairly widely known. The geek has a low status in the carnival and is usu. considered mentally deranged or perverted.
2. A snake charmer; carnival and circus use.
3. A sideshow freak, usu. spurious. Carnval and circus use.
4. A half man, half animal sideshow performer of gory, cannibalistic feats, such as eating live snakes, biting off the head of chicken, etc. carival use.
5. A degenerate; one who will do anything, however disgusting, in order to satify or get money to satisfy degnerate desires. Often used fig., as an insult.
6. A drunk.
