argot? ou sens propre? euphemism probably Explanation: Given the context, I would tend to take "top models" as a euphemism for the professional activities of the gorgeous women 'escorting' or at the very least hanging out with the mobsters and other rich, semi-legitimate men who people late Moscow nights, when honest Moscovites are tucked up in bed... |

argot? ou sens propre? supermodel Explanation: Literal (sens propre) I think and feel. To keep it simple, "For decades, the modeling world was defined by glamorous exclusivity: impossibly thin models in designer duds, consuming designer drugs, booze and cigarettes." (New York Post) When you're paid $10,000 (in the golden age of the supermodel, the 90s) just to get out of bed and you don't have to be at the baked beans factory at 8am, you can stay up past midnight and have a shandy or two, and maybe stronger things...not many rules apply. A brief investigation of the book and the author suggests that if he meant something else, he would just say it. Used to work for the Italian PM, Goncourt proze, etc. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2023-04-11 09:08:26 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Asker's discussion entry: the supermodels are emblematic of fake Western values, they can't actually do anything and contribute little or nothing to society. Now we have reality TV stars (one got elected president of a biggish country!) and influencers and the likes. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2023-04-11 09:11:10 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Goncourt prize, obviously – typo. |
